Rare and original, 1890's Large Size, Tiffin Dakota Glass Pharmacy / Apothecary / Candy Store Show Globe / Cylinder Jar with original ground, thumb print lid.
This beautiful, Early American Pattern Glass Vertical Cylinder Show Globe measures approx. 24” tall and 5 1/2” in diameter at the base. It features a diamond point pattern at the neck and thumbprint pattern border at the top and bottom edges. The Jar retains its original, ground glass lid which exhibits a matching thumb print pattern. A Show Globe is a glass vessel of various shapes and sizes containing a colorful liquid or displaying a product for sale at an establishment. It has been a symbol of pharmacy from the 17th century England to the early 20th century in the United States. It marked the drugstore or apothecary in much the same way as the barber's pole marked tonsorial establishments in some countries. People who were illiterate needed such symbols to locate these medical practitioners. In the late 19th and early 20th century Show Globes were also used to hold brightly colored, penny candy in a Candy Store or a General Store.
This outstanding, late 19th century Dakota Show Globe / Cylinder Jar is in very good condition - clean and clear and beautiful. There is a single, tiny flake on the collar above the foot of the Jar and a tiny chip on the rim of the lid. There are no other chips, cracks, discoloration or damage of any kind. Both the lid and the jar are ground and original to each other.
